St. Paul’s Department of Emergency Medicine, in conjunction with the University of British Columbia, is pleased to offer a clinical research fellowship in emergency medicine (EM). Fellows must have completed an accredited EM training program and be eligible for a medical licence in British Columbia. The successful applicant will obtain a Masters of Health Science from the Depart-ment of Health Care and Epidemi-ology during the 2-year fellowship. Research advisory faculty will facilitate course selection and choice of thesis. Eligibility for the fellowship is contingent upon acceptance into the Masters program.
During the 2-year program, the research fellow will work as a licensed emergency physician in St. Paul’s emergency department. The level of emergency faculty support will match the need and will gradually diminish during the training. Our intent is that, by the end of the fellowship, the trainee will have fully developed clinical skills appropriate for independent practise in any tertiary care urban emergency department.
Clinical shifts will generate funds for the salary and will be customized to optimize clinical experience and academic needs. The fellow will focus on one major research program and be mentored by experienced clinical researchers in the arts of trial design, coordination, analysis and manuscript preparation. Authorship on multiple publications (including principal authorship on at least one major paper) is expected. The fellow will have no formal departmental administrative or teaching responsibilities, but will have opportunities to participate in the clinical teaching of medical students and EM residents.
