CAEP Roadshow activities and participation in 2002

CAEP Administration

CJEM 2003;5(4):286-287

The attendance statistics in the Table on the next page provide a fairly accurate picture of who CAEP reaches with the Roadshows, which in turn helps us to evaluate whether we are fulfilling our CME mandate. Here are a few comments on some of the more significant findings.

  1. The vast majority of attendees are practising physicians (672/740 = 91%). We are pleased that some residents and a few other health professionals attend our Roadshows, but we are even more pleased that our main audience is our target audience, physicians in practice. Over 700 physicians across the country participated in a CAEP Roadshow in 2002.
  2. We are reaching physicians who are not members of CAEP. Forty-four percent of physician registrants are not members, and about 1 in 7 of these becomes a member, thereby benefiting from the reduced member fees. Members are the life-blood of any association, and the Roadshows help to recruit between 40 and 60 new members every year.
  3. The average attendance at a Roadshow in 2002 was just under 30 registrants. This is a little lower than usual but reflects our commitment to take our CME out to the regions right across the country. For a scheduled open-invitation Roadshow we like to have a minimum of 20 registrants, but for a program that is brought into a specific community or group by request, smaller numbers are acceptable. We are committed to keeping registration under 50 in order to ensure an interactive experience.
  4. Roadshows that are current are scheduled up to 10 times over a calendar year. Older Roadshows are still available on request. Current Roadshows in 2003 will be AIME; Different Strokes, Different Folks; and the Toxicology Roadshow. Plugs and Drugs will be moving into the "available on request" category.

While we are quite satisfied with these results (and particularly grateful to all those who contributed to the overall success), we do hope to increase the number of Roadshows to about 30 per year, to increase the total number of physician participants to about 1000, and to increase the number the smaller centres across Canada that we visit, while continuing our programs in the large cities.
