Dr. Ivan Steiner, an Emergency Physician from the University of Alberta, has been awarded the highest national award for teaching and leadership in education, the 3M National Teaching Fellowship, for his revolutionary patient- and student-centred teaching of EM physicians.
Cosponsored by the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and 3M Canada Company, the fellowships are open to Canadian university teachers from all disciplines. Up to 10 fellowships are presented each year to recognize both teaching excellence and education leadership. Since their inception in 1986, fellowships have been awarded to 218 Canadian university professors, representing 41 universities. In previous years only 5 clinicians have been selected: 3 internists, a psychiatrist and a family physician. This is a first for emergency medicine.
